This service relates to the treatment the injured worker would receive in the acute phase of their injury. It aims to quickly reduce pain and restore function so that an early return to work is achievable.
Typically, physiotherapy treatment would include a thorough assessment to determine the exact cause of the worker's pain followed by hands on treatment to reduce joint pain and muscle spasm. Different modalities can also be used to assist in pain relief or reduction of swelling. As soon as possible, the worker is given exercises to perform at home to ensure that the range of movement is maintained and their strength is restored. Towards the end of their treatment more work specific programmes are used to prepare the worker for a return to duties if required.
At all stages of treatment the worker is encouraged to actively participate in the rehabilitation process and the physiotherapist will liaise closely with the doctor to ensure upgrades as the worker's condition improves. The physiotherapist will also closely monitor the worker to determine if any psychosocial factors are contributing to their condition. Appropriate referrals will be made if necessary.
